Trallwn Primary School is a Rights Respecting School and we are currently working towards becoming a Gold Rights Respecting School. We were assessed in June 2021 for our Silver Award and we are very proud of achieving this amazing award.
At Trallwn Primary School, we work hard on promoting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The universal rights of children are enshrined in the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The Award involves young people and the school community learning about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day. The Award is not just about what children do but also, importantly, what adults do. In Rights Respecting Schools children’s rights are promoted and realised and adults and children work towards to achieve this goal.
There are 54 articles laid down under the Convention that have to be provided by adults. They are unconditional. However, the Convention also refers to the responsibilities of children. Responsibilities accompany rights, and our school rules of READY, RESPECTFUL and SAFE are based upon them.
There are four key areas of impact for children at a Rights Respecting school; well-being, participation, relationships and self-esteem. We believe the difference that a Rights Respecting School makes goes beyond the school gates, making a positive impact on the whole community.
Children are healthier and happier
By promoting the values of respect, dignity and non-discrimination, children’s self-esteem and well-being is boosted and they are less likely to suffer from stress. A child who understands their rights understands how they and others should be treated and their sense of self-worth is strengthened.
Children feel safe
The Rights Respecting Schools Award gives children a powerful language to use to express themselves and to challenge the way they are treated. They are also able to challenge injustices for other children. Children and young people are empowered to access information that enables them to make informed decisions about their learning, health and well-being.
Our involvement in the award to date has certainly supported our belief in the benefits and has empowered our children to take the first steps in achieving our school Vision and Values.

We have created a Rights Mascot called Chloe the Crocodile! You have probably seen her around our school and if your child is in the Foundation Phase, we send a Chloe Story Sack home with pupils every week! This is the original design and a picture of how she was brought to life using animation!
