As we find ourselves in yet another lockdown we resume learning from home. Each week I will set missions for you to complete and share with you on Class Dojo, Teams and J2e.

Home Learning – ISOLATION 7/12/20 – 18/12/20

While we all have to self isolate work will be set on Microsoft TEAMS for Year 6, Zircon to complete. Please see ‘Missions’ below and the weeks timetable.

I will be available via Class Dojo and e-mail 09.00 – 16.00, Monday to Friday to answers questions and support your child in their learning in any way I can.

The Bubble Boy – Isolation Missions

 Topic 1: Lliwiau‘r Enfys

Our first topic of the year is ‘Lliwiau’r Enfys’ which is a Health & Well being focused topic. The children have influenced the planning and come up with some fantastic ideas. The topic is not simply about the colours of the rainbow but about dealing with adversity and how the rainbow became a symbol of the lock down, the pandemic and what it means.

We learned and performed ‘The Harvest Moon’ for our Harvest Assembly.

Welcome back to school!

It’s been such a strange and unsettling time for many but I am so pleased to be able to welcome you back to school, and into Year 6!

PE will take place on Wednesdays with our first session on the 16th of September 2020. You will need to wear your PE kit to school as we can’t change in school at this time. Please wear trainers, joggers, a school t-shirt and jumper as you will need to stay warm. Mr Jones will be teaching these lessons as well as some exciting Health and Wellbeing focused sessions.

Home Learning Ideas

Here are some great home learning activities for you to try. Some don’t need a computer or the internet but are still rich learning opportunities. Have fun and please, if you can, share on Twitter or Class Dojo using #TeamZircon and tag the school @trallwnprimary .

Make a comic book

It doesn’t have to be about super heroes. Comic books can be about anything. You can research them online or just go for it. Be as imaginative and wacky as you like.

You can make a comic book template (or download one here). Why not make one showing the peculiar life of your household or write about the superheroes in the NHS?

The Beano is a great source of inspiration. Its website contains lots of comic strip examples.

Cook

Make something in the kitchen, it doesn’t have to be cakes! Making pizza is lots of fun. Find a recipe, make the dough and choose your toppings. Can you make a healthy pizza? Don’t forget to weigh and measure all the ingredients accurately, time your cooking and at the right temperature. You will be applying lots of practical maths skills!

There’s also lots of ratio involve in cooking, just like we’ve been doing on Mathletics.

Make it a challenge. Change the recipe to work for more or less people. How much of each ingredient will you need now? Will you need to cook for the same length of time?

Play rugby…or any other sport

Practice your skills in the garden. What tricks can you do? There’s loads of videos of professional athletes showing off their skills during the lock down. Play catch or even make up your own game.

Remember it’s important to keep fit and active even during a lock down. If you are lucky enough to have a garden, use it.

Set yourself a challenge, record your results in a table. For example, how many ‘keepy uppys’ can you do? Track them over time.

 Go on a tour…well a virtual one

Bored of the lock down? Want to explore? There are loads of virtual tours available and many a free.

The British Museum and the Natural History Museum both have great interactivity through the Google Arts and Culture app.

Have fun exploring. Why not write an article about your adventure as if you were really there and writing for a newspaper or magazine?

Letter writing

Why not write a real letter to a family member. Post it and see if you get a reply. You may want to write to your local Assembly Member (AM) or Member of Parliament (MP) and ask them about something which means a lot to you, perhaps the current lock down.

Check with your parents and or guardians before writing to someone.

Coding

Use J2e Code in Hwb, Scratch or Minecraft Education Edition to practice your coding skills. Make a game or an animation, complete the build challenges in Minecraft.

There’s loads of tutorials out there to get you started and loads of competitions you can enter. You never know you may end up as the next Bill Gates!

Story writing

• You’ll need at least two people, taking turns.
• The first person shares a sentence beginning with the word ‘Fortunately’ – their role is to tell a happy, optimistic tale.
• The next person begins with ‘Unfortunately’, and responds, trying to make the story sad.
• The playful back and forth is fun in itself, but can lead to inventive story ideas.

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies is a fantastic resources. Loads of books and comprehensions based on what you’ve just read. It tracks your progress and pushes you up a level whenever you are ready. Great for daily reading practice.
